Proctored implies that you will be supervised as you take your exam (either in a group, or individually with a proctor). I am aware that not all online classes at this or other institutions require proctored exams. Many online courses are FULLY online, including examinations.
Our math department chooses to require proctored exams to help reduce academic dishonesty as we are aware there are many programs, apps, websites, tutors and resources (notes) available for any students who would like to take advantage of them during examinations. This helps protect the integrity of the course and make the rigor comparable to students taking this course in a face to face manner where they too are required to take a proctored exam. My question for you to answer for this journal entry is: 1. Are you for or against proctored exams (please explain why)? 2. If the math department dismissed proctored exams and made all exams fully online, what percent of students do you believe would use some sort of third party assistance on their exams (please be honest, this will not count against you :-)
