Assignment Details
Installing and configuring databases are important first steps when working with a database because this is not software typically pre-installed on computers for use by general users. This class will enable you to work with a database server available for Microsoft operating systems that is well accepted in the industry and used by many. Using this popular database will provide you with the opportunity to learn database concepts and skills that will enhance your IT knowledge in a real database environment. However, some preparation of your computer is necessary. STEP 1 – Refer to System Requirements for Software InstallationTo identify the computer resources that you will need in order to install the software, click on the following and review System Requirements for Processor, RAM, and Hard Disk Space.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35579STEP 2 – Identify your Hardware ResourcesWhenever one installs software, it is crucial that one checks computer hardware to make sure the necessary resources are available. You should also double check that you have enough disk space to install the software. Prior to installing the software for this class, follow the necessary steps to examine your resources. Below are steps for a Windows system. Once you have located the information, jot them down so that you can report your findings in this activity.
- Identify computer hardware resources by displaying Computer Properties. Click on your Start, or Windows, button and the right click on My Computer. Select Properties. This is how you will learn your computer’s processor speed and installed RAM.
- Open Windows Explorer and examine the amount of hard disk space available. This is shown when you right click on Local Disk (C:) and select Properties.
STEP 3 – Compare and ReportYour first discussion post should contain the following information.
- Type of Computer (i.e. HP, Asus, Apple, etc.) and Operating System (Windows 8, Windows 10, Linux, MAC OS, etc.)
- Processor Speed
- Installed Memory (RAM)
- System Type
- Free Space
- Confirmation that the available resources are available.
- Notify your instructor directly in the event your computer does not have the necessary resources available.
Discuss any questions or issues you have with the instructor and your classmates.STEP 4 – Install Software if Requirements Met
- Prior to the installation of the SQL Server software, you will need to check that you have the necessary prerequisite software installed. Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, and PowerShell 2.0 are prerequisites. To determine the versions for installed Microsoft .NET Framework, open Windows Explorer. Open the following folders to determine the installed versions of .NET. You will see multiple folders with version numbers. The names of two of the folders should include v3.5 and v4.0 or above.Local Disk (C:) Windows Microsoft.NET Framework V3.5 V4.0
There are two approaches to determine whether you have Windows PowerShell installed on your system. First, open Control Panel Administrative Tools. If PowerShell is installed, you will see Windows PowerShell Modules listed as one of the available services. If you do not see it listed there, perform the second approach. Click on your Start or Windows button and then select All Programs. Look for Windows PowerShell in the list.Notify your instructor immediately for further instructions if you do not have necessary prerequisite software installed. Do not attempt to install SQL Server until you have communicated with your instructor.
- Download and install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express Edition using SQL Server authentication.
- Download and install one of the following 2 files based on your operating system: SQLEXPRWT_x64 – if you have a 64 bit operating system SQLEXPRWT_x86 – if you have a 32 bit operating systemThe file listed above will include both Microsoft SQL Server 2012, Express Edition, and SQL Server Management Studio. SQL Server Management Studio is used as the client graphical user interface (GUI)
- Review the information regarding Details, System Requirements and Install Instructions prior to the download. Note that Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0, Windows PowerShell 2.0 and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 are prerequisites and must be pre-installed.
- Click here to download the SQL Server software.
- Follow the installation instructions found in the Install Instructions section. Use the configuration defaults for all except database engine configuration authentication mode. Select Mixed Mode including SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication. Remember the password that you chose for the SQL Server system administrator account.
- Be sure to set up and enable SQL Server authentication mode when you install the software.
- Review the log referenced at the completion of the installation to ensure success.
Step 5Discuss with the class your experiences. For example, what questions did you have before you installed and configured the software? What, if any, issues did you have during the installation and configuration process? How did you resolve any installation or configuration issues? What suggestions would you have for others who need to install and configure the software based upon your experience?
- What did you learn following the outlined process above? How can we determine what software is installed on our computer? How can we ensure that our computers meet the minimum hardware/software requirements? What did you learn about the difference between Windows authentication and Mixed Mode Authentication? Where did you find the computer’s name for the SQL Server set up?
