Autism
The last two decades has seen a sharp rise in the number of individual's diagnosed with autism and autistic-spectrum disorders. There have been numerous theories about what has contributed to this rise, ranging from early-life overexposure to mercury, to adverse reactions to vaccines. Some suggest that the increase in cases of autism may simply be the result in advances in our understanding of neurological functioning and more precise assessment tools. The exact causes of autism and what may contribute to the increase of identified cases remains unknown, as well as a hotly debated issue.
Something similar happened in American during the 1980s, when there was a significant increase in the number of children diagnosed with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Once again, people worried that ADHD was caused by exposure to toxins, post-natal vaccines and a host of other factors.
