Background: In this course, we learn that conservation of momentum, conservation of angular momentum, and conservation of energy are physical principles verified in the real world. When designing a world for a novel, a comic book, a movie, or a video game, one has to do "world building", or generate sets of physical rules that can or cannot be broken. To make the fake world relatable, the author often choose to replicate our physical world and rules of physics, but may add an extra ingredient: magic, the speed force, vibranium, spirits, etc. However, these additions often include considerations about conservation laws.
Learning outcome: You will apply what you've learned about conservation laws and look for examples where they are broken in imagined worlds.
Your task (and rubric): This assignment is graded out of 1 point and is a text submission. Find an example where one of the conservation laws is intentionally broken by the writer(s), in a media of your choice (novel, a comic book, a movie, tv show, video game). Explain what is being broken. Now find another example where one of the conservation laws is unintentionally broken by the writer(s), meaning they made a mistake because they did not think it through. Hint: science-fiction movies can often provide examples of both.
