Barbara McClintock found a genetic factor in corn called Ds(for Disassociator) which caused a high frequency of chromosome breakage at its locus. This breakage at the Ds locus is dependent upon another unlinked gene Ac(for Activator). When she tried to map Ac by association with genetic markers of the various corn chromosomes, it was impossible to map. In the same line of corn plants, some plants it mapped to one position, and in other plants, it mapped to a different position. Ds also constantly changed positions on the chromosome, but only if Ac were present.

Please explain the following behaviors of Ds and Ac in terms of transposable genetic elements.

A. Ac locus movement

B. Ac-dependent movement of Ds locus.

C. Chromosomal breakage at the Ds locus
