Based on the class visit to Amazon Produce in Vineland, NJ, on 24 October 2019, write a report
that shows your understanding of the firm’s operations and supply chain management, and in
particular how these functions are designed and run to support the firm’s business objectives. As
far as possible, your report should implicitly include answers to the five questions listed below,
plus anything else you discover during the visit that you see as highly relevant. Besides the
experience of the visit, use internet sources for your report, e.g., information about the fruit
growing industry, fruit importing, distribution, and retail.
(1) What are the competitive priorities of the firm?
(2) What process strategies are used and what capacity decisions are relevant?
(3) How is the supply chain organized (suppliers, facilities, distribution network)?
(4) What evidence do you see of strategic fit?
(5) What are the operations and supply chain challenges, and how are they addressed?
Use concepts from the POM 610 textbook and slides in formulating your answers: theory of
constraints, efficiency vs. responsiveness, supply chain drivers, coordination, etc.
Formatting requirements for the report: 12 point font, 1 inch margins, single spacing. Minimum
length is 1000 words, maximum length is 1500 words (diagrams and tables are encouraged to
improve report quality, but do not count towards report length). Include a word count with your
report. Submissions that are shorter or longer than the limits will lose points for inappropriate
length.
The report score will be based 75% on the comprehensiveness and originality of the discussion
on operations and supply chain management. The remaining 25% of the report score will be
assessed on clarity, organization, appropriate length, language quality, and adequacy of
references (sources should be indicated for all information except discussions during the visit).
