Based on this reading https://www.mediafire.com/file/7pqe8j1c90wd0xs/Social+Order+pp+41+to+55+(1).pdf/file, write a entry journal.
Each entry of your Reading Journal should provide:
a) A full citation of the excerpt, including the name of the author, year of publication, title, place of publication. A citation guide is available on Brightspace to help you. Many citations are also included directly on the weekly slides.
b) The main point or central message of the piece in your own words, i.e. the theoretical question that the piece is trying to answer and the theory or theoretical perspective that has been proposed as the answer to the question;
c) The historical context, e.g. you can use the date of publication to help you locate the piece historically in terms of what was happening in the society during the time that the author was writing. Do some cursory research on the historical context of the piece using the links on the slides. Use your class lecture notes because we discuss the historical context in class.
d) How the author supports their argument or theory; and
e) Citations and references for any external sources that are used in your journal entry. It is not required or necessary to use outside sources to write your journal entries. However, if you do use external sources, you MUST cite them. This includes any use of AI.
This is a comment from my professor on one of my previous journal entries; keep it in mind when writing.
A fair beginning to your reading journal. Your entry is organized well and you write clearly about the central message. You must cite the sources you use for the historical context. If you used AI for any new content, you should cite it. However, also note that I don't allow the use of AI in that way because it cannot substitute for reading and scholarship. You should use the links provided in the slides for additional information about the author, the concepts, and the historical context. In several places, I'm not sure what you mean by, for instance, "limit behavior by requisition or penalty" or sociology had "no distinct methodological delimitations". Try to write in your own words about what you understand. And when you need to use another author's words, make sure you quote or cite in the text of your writing. I will also go over this in class. With a little effort in understanding the readings and articulating them in your own words, you can improve on the rest of your journal.
