Bethony and colleagues published a paper entitled, "Vaccines to combat the neglected tropical diseases," in which they outline the progress of international research and development (R&D) initiatives to develop new vaccines for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). NTDs represent a group of parasitic and related infectious diseases such as amebiasis, Chagas disease, cysticercosis, echinococcosis, hookworm, leishmaniasis, and schistosomiasis. According to the authors, together, these conditions are considered the most common infections in low- and middle-income countries, where they produce a level of global disability and human suffering equivalent to better known conditions such as HIV and malaria. Despite their global public health importance, R&D efforts for vaccines to combat many of these conditions have lagged behind AIDS and malaria vaccine efforts.

Imagine that you are developing a vaccine, beginning with Phase I, to combat one of the NTDs discussed in the manuscript. Use the information provided in Chapter 8 and the table below to suggest possible study designs, primary objectives and endpoints, study populations and locations to evaluate your imaginary vaccine at each of the four study phases. The reference for the article is below and the paper is available from PubMed Central (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/).
