 Binomial Distribution

A report to Health Canada indicated that an intensive education program was used in an attempt to lower the rate of lung cancer development among females. After running the program, a long-term follow-up study of 504 females was conducted, which revealed the current rate of lung cancer development is 7.4 %.

a)     Find the probability that 10 or less females have lung cancer development.

b)     Assuming the program has effect, find the mean and standard deviation for the number of lung cancer cases in groups of 504 females.

c)     Considering that unusual values are outside the interval μ-2σ, μ+2σ, is 20 females out of 504 females with lung cancer development unusually low or not? Show calculations.

Poisson Distribution

The number of power outages at a retirement center has a mean of 4 outages per year.

a)     What is the probability of exactly 4 outages in a year?

b)     What is the probability of 3 or more outages in a year?

Normal Distribution

The time that a skier takes on a downhill course has a normal distribution with a mean of 12.4 minutes and standard deviation of 0.44 minutes.

a)     What is the probability that on a random run this skier takes less than 11 minutes?

b) What is the probability that on a random run this skier takes between 11.5min and 14.6min?
