QUESTION

Black History

The textbook is African American Odyssey Volume 2, 6th edition  (5th edition is also acceptable) by Darlene Hine, et. al.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: Here is your opportunity to demonstrate that you understand the some of the broad themes of African American history  (1865 to the present) covered in this course:

History Repeats Itself? Or is it that nothing really changed? In the aftermath of slavery, newly emancipated African Americans faced the backlash of white supremacy. While it may be understandable that such a backlash would occur during the first two or three decades after emancipation, the shocking reality is that this backlash persisted for a full century (100 years) after emancipation (1865-1965). Or does this backlash still persist in 2017?

In a five (minimum) to seven (maximum) page write a smoothly connected, integrated cohesive paper that connects the following dots:

  1. Discuss Reconstruction including the Reconstruction amendments (13th, 14th and 15th), backlashes such as the Black Codes, and Civil Rights Act of 1866 (vetoed) and 1875 (declared unconstitutional) Do this in chronological order not the order listed. [about one page]
  2. Post-Reconstruction including the Tilden-Hayes Compromise of 1877, the withdrawal of federal troops from the South and the nightmare of terrorism that was unleashed via the Ku Klux Klan and mob-lynching [about one page]
  3. Compare and contrast the above to the Modern Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s [about two to three pages]

Pay special attention to the following two issues (a) and (b):

           (a) Segregation especially on public transportation conveyances (railroads, streetcars, city buses, interstate buses, etc. You will want to look at Chapter 14 pages 358-                     360 with emphasis on the Plessy v. Ferguson case (p. 359 and sidebar, p. 360) on the one hand and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, (p. 579-580) and Freedom Rides                   (p.586-588) on the other hand. What are the similarities between the conditions faced by Homer Plessy and Rosa Parks (see also Profile p. 581) and the Freedom                       Riders (see p. 579 and Profile, p. 581).

( b) Anti-black violence especially lynching (p.361-364) in the post-Reconstruction era on the one hand and lynching of Emmit Till (p. 572) and Violence and the Civil                           Rights Movement (sidebars pages 592-593) on the other hand.

(4) Comment on what, if anything, has changed today since the 1960s with regard to anti-black violence [about one page)

Please make sure it's a 5 page paper, Times new roman, double space
