M4A1: Paragraph Essay: Unethical Environments

This activity addresses module outcome 4. Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Analyze the ways in which human behavior may change because of an unethical environment. (CO5)

The purpose of this activity is to examine human behavior within unethical environments.  We have chosen two prison examples that put people into unethical environments for you to examine and compare. Look at the material from the Stanford website (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and review the material found there. Also, watch the video about the experiment from the experimenter:

Next, read the report about the Abu Gharaib [PDF File size 6MB] prison case.

After you have read and viewed the prison material, you are ready to write your compare and contrast essay.  You have two different readings that take place in a prison.  One is a real-world scenario while the other is an experiment where the reaction of subjects change because of the prison experiment.  You will need to address both similarities and differences based on some guiding questions.

You will then compare and contrast the ethical issues surrounding the two examples of unethical environments.

Write a 2-3-page essay in APA Format. In your essay, address the following questions:

  • Compare the competing values at stake in the Abu Ghraib prison and the Stanford Prison Experiment.
  • Explain your answer.
  • What situation in both cases should participants have avoided to do the right thing? Why didn't they do it?
  • Finally, explain the similarities and differences in each situation that caused changes in human behavior.
