Book Review on Night by Elie Wiesel
GUIDELINES FOR BOOK REVIEW
Night by Elie Wiesel
1. Your book review should be two to three complete pages and be written using Times New Roman font, size 12, 1-inch margins, and double-spaced. Be sure to staple your papers and include your name at the top of the first page. Papers less than two complete pages, meaning your review should reach the bottom of the page, or failing to adhere to these other guidelines will suffer point deductions.
2. You must write an analysis of the book Night. This is not a book report. I do not want just a two to three page summary of the primary source or your opinion on whether the book was good or not. Instead, based on the question prompts below, I want you to formulate your own argument and support that argument with evidence from the book and any class lectures that pertain to the topic.
3. Below are the questions I want you to consider when writing your argument. Please only choose one to discuss in your review:
What does Wiesel’s memoir reveal to us about the human experience of the Holocaust? What was life like for a Jew in the ghetto, concentration camps, and under German authority?
What role does religion play in Eliezer’s life? How does Elie’s views on religion and the purpose of life transform throughout the book?
4. Be sure to quote phrases and sentences borrowed from Wiesel’s memoir. If the words are exactly those of the author, make sure that you use quotation marks. Quotation marks should be followed by the page number where the quote was taken and placed in parenthesis following the period of the sentence. Most of this book review should be written in your OWN WORDS – meaning you should only use a limited number of quotes.
5. Your writing is very important. Points will be deducted for errors in spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. If your paper is hard to read and confusing, then your grade will also suffer accordingly. Please take the time to proofread your paper so that any mistakes will be caught and corrected.
6. If you choose to write your book review on this book, it is due at the beginning of class on April 11. Please print it out and bring it to class. No late papers will be accepted.
