Both pages 17 and 19 directly state that women have "duties of a daughter, wife, and mother". In fact, nearly every argument that Wollstonecraft gives to say that women must be educated involves gender roles. Page 17 is slightly more generous, stating that women should be educated for their own good, but "why do we need good women?" is still answered by the relationships that women have with men in the large majority of instances. Wollstonecraft clearly believes that these duties of daughter, wife, and mother are central to being a good woman. She actually blames women for their own subjugation in chapter 13 (feel free to read it!). This is first-wave Feminism.Notably, Wollstonecraft does not argue that education makes women better workers, political participants, or that women are free to do as they please for the sake of their own pleasure (she actually says this is part of the problem). Divorce and abortion are strongly prohibited because they would go against the duties of daughter, wife, and mother. These are advocated by second and/or third-wave Feminists. So, the thought experiment: do the duties of being a daughter, wife, and mother add to the value of being a woman? If no, is there anything special about being a woman? Please write 250 words and no plagiarism.
