Discussion 3 Questions

Reminder:Please note the syllabus instructions which limit initial responses per question. Your instructor will note how many students can respond with an initial post to each question. By the end of the     module you will have posted on all of the topics.

  1. Choose a selection of Luke which is not found in either Mark or Matthew or, if there is a parallel, is substantially different. Choose a short narrative section, a particular teaching or set of teachings in one portion of a chapter, or a parable. First, briefly describe the selection of your choosing. Then, discuss why the particulars of the narrative or theological elements involved with your passage fit into Luke’s Gospel as a whole. This discussion must involve specific information from Brown’s text as well as a detailed justification of your position using specific examples from Luke. Finally, identify a form of textual criticism which could be helpful in interpreting your selection. Explain your rationale. Choose a selection of text not chosen by another classmate.

Note: Response posts must begin by critiquing the initial post’s argumentation. Identify aspects of the initial post with which you agree and/or those with which you disagree. Be very clear and detailed as to your rationale. Whereas it is the job of the initial post to suggest a clear justification for why the material in question belongs in Luke, it is the job of the response posts to make an argument for whether or not the material would fit well in Mark’s or Matthew’s Gospel. On this last point, be clear and utilize some specific information from Brown’s text.

  1. Identify and discuss one major theological theme in the Acts of the Apostles associated with the growth of the Church in light of concerns about koinōnia. Begin by identifying and describing at least one major instance in Acts which relates to your theme. Root your discussion of this theological theme in a description of any sociological concerns associated with the passage(s) of your choosing. Information from Brown’s text must be clearly utilized. Choose a theme not chosen by another classmate.

Note: Response posts must build on the theme chosen in the initial post. This can be done in one of two ways: (1) the response post can identify and discuss another significant instance of the chosen theme in Acts, or (2) the response post can choose a related theme in Acts. In either case, a response post must offer a careful presentation and discussion of the theme and the example text. Response posts must utilize some specific information from Brown’s text.

Part of your post must present and describe some key biblical passages which are related to this theme. Initial posts must also identify and explain how a form of biblical criticism could productively be used to interpret the biblical passages chosen. Information from Brown’s text must be clearly utilized in the initial post. Choose a theme not chosen by another classmate.

Note: Response posts must build on the theme chosen in the initial post. This can be done in one of two ways: (1) the response post can identify and discuss this theme in other significant instances in the text, or (2) the response post can choose a related theme by identifying and discussing a new theme in light of specific passages in Luke and Acts. In either case, a response post must offer a careful presentation and discussion of the theme and the example texts. Response posts must utilize some specific information from Brown’s text.
