MGMT 450 – Strategy and Competitive Advantage

Week 6 Written Assignment

PLEASE DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING – (400-600words)

Your assignment for this week is based around a section in Chapter 6 of the textbook (pages 174-176) entitled STRATEGIC POSITION. I suggest you read it through several times before writing your paper. THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL PAPER FORMAT – BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE NEW FORMAT!

  • □  Imagine you have been given this assignment by your new boss.

  • □  Your job is to write a brief, approximately two page HOW-TO guide or handout for your newly-formed team entitled: How to develop/create a strategic position for your product or service.

  • □  In other words, this paper is not written for me. Instead you are introducing your new team at work to the concept of strategic positioning and teaching them how to use it, including how to incorporate the two generic types of strategies: differentiation and cost leadership.

  • □  You should start with the material in the section on pages 174-176, but you are free to supplement it with other material from Chapter 6 or other parts of the textbook (please include sources (i.e., Text, 204). You can also look for supporting material from the videos and articles – and after that, you can add reputable sources on the internet. (use the rest pages attached for more sources, and please cite for where you use)

  • □  Your goal is to include a clear explanation of the concept in your own words (not lifted from the book, but researched and then rewritten by you) along with whatever explanation and instructions that your teams might need to effectively use the concept in their work. Note: If you do a good job, your boss might use your paper with other teams in the future.

  • □  You can also use the matrix in Exhibit 6.2 on page 175 as is or re-create it if you wish.

  • □  IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THIS FORMAT, YOUR PAPER WON’T BE GRADED.
