Flint, T. P. (2018). On the Significance of Civil War References in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.”Renascence,70(2), 119–128.

This article sheds light on the civil war references in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find". The story gives several references to the civil war that up until reading the article I had no idea they existed. The article examines how these references to the civil war depict the era in which the story was written. The author of the article mentions how the grandmother may have belonged to the group called the Daughters of the Confederacy. The grandmother could easily be seen as a racist, who takes advantage of any opportunity to manipulate people and situations for her own personal gain. Flint discusses the imagery of the gray, cloudless, sunless sky and compares it to the Misfit seeing the sky as the cell in which he was imprisoned in.

Although I found this article to be both informative and interesting I won't be including it in my final draft. Flint's article offered a unique perspective of O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find". I enjoyed the way he pointed out references to the civil war that were not obvious to me. I appreciated reading another view of the story and I gained a better understanding of the story. As we read this story and travel with the family they appear to be embroiled in a small scale civil war of their own, filled with chaos and darkness that remains the order for day up until the demise of the entire family.

Evans, R. (2015). Tim O’Brien’s the things they carried: initial reception and detailed analysis. Critical Insights: Tim O’Brien. p 202-218.

This article praises O’Brien for giving life to the individuals in the story. It touches on the many themes found within The Things They Carried. The vast amount of themes makes the story easily relatable to almost anyone on the planet at any point in time. The article focuses on the initial reviewers of the story and the response they had for the content. The themes in The Things They Carried showed that literature did not have to focus on describing the human features through direct means, but that the word choice can give the reader more meaningful insight into the human’s character.

This article lacked clarity because it jumped from one topic to another without transitional phrases. It was relevant to my literary analysis of The Things They Carried because it spoke on the themes used in the story and talked directly about the use of the objects and their significance to each soldier to give the reader a glimpse into the life of the soldiers. The article goes over the theme of necessity and how the soldiers were people with their own pasts and they were not carbon copies like many people believe that soldiers in the Vietnam War were.
