Coaching for Assignment 2
For this assignment you will choose your method and write only to that method—not both
Please note: A phenomena is defined as a fact, occurrence, or circumstance observed or observable. You are to discuss the nature of the issue that you are exploring. This means —what is going on that you are noticing? What makes individuals want to shop at Nordstroms and not another store? Describe this using your observational skills. This is not a restatement of the Problem Statement :)
Write a paper (1,250-1,500 words) in which you revise your research questions and provide a theoretical foundation or conceptual framework that will ground your study. Use either the qualitative or quantitative directions below depending on your topic. Hint: Review relevant literature and theories that provide a foundation for understanding the problem.
Quantitative Topics
Restate the problem statement and the variables for your proposed topic.
State the research questions and corresponding sets of hypotheses. Defend how these research questions address the problem statement and each variable. How might the answers to these research questions inform the problem space?
Outline the key concepts or constructs included in the theoretical foundation or conceptual framework.
Explain how the theory(ies) or conceptual framework guide the research topic identified from the problem space.
Defend why this theoretical foundation or conceptual framework was selected over other alternatives.
Clarify the relationships or connections between these components and how they contribute to understanding the research phenomenon.
Explain how the theory(ies) or conceptual framework define the variables. If using multiple theories, explain the theoretical relationship already established, if any, between the research variables.
Quantitative Topics
1. Restate the problem statement and the variables for your proposed topic. You will have received feedback from the first assignment which is “my opinion only” and hopefully attended two of my open office hours or posted in the Instructor Added Forum for more feedback on your topic. You will continue to refine your statement during many courses and nothing is in stone until your Proposal Defense with your Committee!
2. State the research questions and corresponding sets of hypotheses. Defend how these research questions address the problem statement and each variable. How might the answers to these research questions inform the problem space? Please go to the Quant Knowledge Base to review how to write the RQs and hypotheses. The dissertation template also has an example in Chapter 3.
3. Outline the key concepts or constructs included in the theoretical foundation or conceptual framework. For you this will depend on the instruments you are using to measure the variables. Your instrument comes from a theory and you must use that one.
4. Explain how the theory(ies) or conceptual framework guide the research topic identified from the problem space. In otherwords, tie the instrument and the theory together
5. Defend why this theoretical foundation or conceptual framework was selected over other alternatives. Please note that your only choice here is with the instruments that you have found to explore your variables. There are amazing lists of instruments in the Quantitative Knowledge Base.
6. Clarify the relationships or connections between these components and how they contribute to understanding the research phenomenon. See the coaching above on how to describe the phenomenon.
7. Explain how the theory(ies) or conceptual framework define the variables. If using multiple theories, explain the theoretical relationship already established, if any, between the research variables. You will probably be using multiple theories ---all depending on the number of instruments you are using to measure the variables.
Qualitative Topics
1. Restate the problem statement and the phenomenon for your proposed topic. You will have received feedback from the first assignment which is “my opinion only” and hopefully attended two of my open office hours or posted in the Instructor Added Forum for more feedback on your topic. You will continue to refine your statement during many courses and nothing is in stone until your Proposal Defense with your Committee!
State the research questions and defend how these questions address the problem statement and phenomenon identified in the problem statement. How might the answers to these research questions inform the problem space? Please-before you state the RQs, indicate the theory you are using and which of the aspects/dimensions/characteristics you are including in your study. With the theory identified, I can help you ensure your RQs are aligned.
3. Outline the key concepts or constructs included in the theoretical foundation or conceptual framework. Please include a graphic (GoogleImages) of your theory and indicate what portions are being included in your study
4. Explain how the theory(ies) or conceptual framework guide the research topic identified from the problem space. This is where you are making the connection to your Problem Spae articles, the theory and the RQs
5. Defend why this theoretical foundation or conceptual framework was selected over other alternatives. I look forward to this discussion!
6. Clarify the relationships or connections between these components and how they contribute to understanding the research phenomenon. Please follow the instructions above for framing the phenomenon statement.
