Justifying Community Needs[WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3]

As a reminder, each week, your assignment will comprise a vital component of your Final Community Stakeholder Presentation and Final Community Assessment Report final projects. As such, you are encouraged to use the feedback you receive each week to make the necessary revisions to make your Week 6 efforts as strong as possible.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review Action Step 4 in Community Health Assessment and Group Evaluation (CHANGE): Building a Foundation of Knowledge to Prioritize Community Needs Download Community Health Assessment and Group Evaluation (CHANGE): Building a Foundation of Knowledge to Prioritize Community Needs[Action guide]. While your data collection methods may vary (external vs. engagement), the end goal should be the same. Work to ensure the data presented is as up-to-date and accurate as possible.

Using the data gathered in Week 1 and the information found in your Five CHANGE Sectors assignment, determine and justify your community's greatest needs. Many times, researchers will believe they “know” the greatest needs of their community without looking at the data because they witness it day to day. While first-hand experience is valuable, it should rarely be the only driver for decision-making. It is easy and natural to want to fix what you personally understand as the most troublesome. However, if the data shows that other areas are of greater need, then ethically, those areas should receive your attention. That is the goal for this assignment.

For this assignment, you will prioritize your community's five greatest needs. You will justify these prioritizations using your gathered data and are encouraged to include first-hand observations related to those needs. You will also be asked to explain what efforts have been implemented in your community to address these needs. Further, you will provide real-world examples of interventions or implementations that were successful at addressing the top two community needs identified and which you can use as a template for your efforts. It is not expected that your community has already made significant progress toward these needs, or they would not still exist. So, you are expected to find interventions or implementations nationwide and highlight those that appear the most effective.

In your paper,

  • Prioritize the five greatest needs of your community.
  • Justify your prioritization by using data supplemented by first-hand accounts or observations for the impact these issues have on the residents.
  • Explain your community's top two most significant needs with the greatest explanation and justification.
  • Present real-world examples of interventions or implementations that have been successful in mitigating these issues.
  • Summarize how you will use these real-world example plans and your participant feedback for your community.
