Describe the error in the conclusion. Given: There is a linear correlation between the number of cigarettes smoked and the pulse rate. As the number of cigarettes increases the pulse rate increases. Conclusion: Cigarettes cause the pulse rate to increase.

This conclusion at first glance seems to have no errors. There are two variables and they have a correlation. A positive linear correlation is when both variables increase together (University of the West of England, 2017). The error in the conclusion statement is that one variable causes the other. Two variables can be related, but does not mean that the one directly causes the other (University of the West of England, 2017). One of the variables is dependant and the other is independan
