While they may look like a group, these people don't share a relation—ship—in other words, they are not sharing sustained, purposeful communi-cation with each other. M ETHICALLY SPEAKING Your Ethical Responsibility in theTransactional Communication Process When you engage others in communicationyou are not only attemptingto influence them in some way, you are also opening yourself to influenceby others. We are ail involved in the transactional process of communica-tion. Keep in mind that all parties to an interaction are responsible for itsoutcome and have a hand in whether or not individual and relational goalsare met. Whether you are talking with your significant other,a parentawork group in a class, or the audience ofa public speech, you shareresponsibility for the outcome of the interaction. The burden of responsi~bility is usually more or less equally distributed, depending on the com-munication situation. in some situations, like public speakingthe speakertends to assume most of the responsibility and is seen as the personattempting to influence the audience.
