An affluent family hires her as a wet nurse and her breasts are subjected to consistent torture due to serving many children at the big house. Jashoda has all the reasons to not take up this derogatory job. There are such stark divisions in society that offering your milk to children of upper class appears to be a sign of subjugation. The son of that wealthy family had crippled her husband and it was because her husband was not capable of earning that she had to seek a job and circumstances force her to serve the very people who caused her so much pain and misery.

This moral conflict got even worse when subsequent commentaries on the story questioned the elite methodology for analyzing subaltern situation. If the story itself is about the subjugation of a third world woman, why should we employ elite methodologies to analyze it? That was the main question posed by Spivak- by far the most influential commentator on Devi’s story. Mahasweti Devi herself was an English teacher and supposedly a member of the upper class. How can she then empathize with the singularity of a gendered society? In other words while the story itself brings out deep moral conflict, Spivak believes that it gets even worse when we realize that an elite analysis is being applied to subaltern oppressive system.
