This research is about the development of intimacy and companionship during adolescence and preadolescence. The primary questions that will be addressed will include: are there any changes in development in the degree to which children yearn for intimacy and companionship in social relations? And are there any changes in the development of the individuals on whom these children depend on to provide anticipated forms of interaction? I believed that the first emergence of companionship in toddlerhood is in the desired form of co-participation in play, while the intimacy need comes much later in preadolescence (Bauminger, Finzi-Dottan, Chason, & Har-Even, 2008). Also, I believed that children alterations took place in relationship partners that these children depend on to accomplish these needs. In toddlers, the parents were the ones who were initially sought to give companionship, but same age peers were preferred to provide companionship as the children joined the school. Moreover, these peer companionship is only limited to the same-sex until the beginning of adolescence where there is a developing of cross-sex relationships. The first need for intimacy comes from the preadolescent friendship. The intimacy that is experienced in friendships gives preadolescents’ consensual authentication of personal value and forms the atmosphere in which caring and mature sensitivity about an individual’s wellbeing is learned. And in adolescence, this form of mature intimacy becomes overwhelmingly searched for in heterosexual relations (Toscano, 2010).
