Oedipus fate was to kill his father and get married to his mother. This article seeks to analyze the theme of fate in Oedipus the King narrative.

Oedipus who became the king of Thebes grew up not knowing his real identity, following the wrong line of life. Despite the many efforts to overcome his fate, Oedipus ends up fulfilling the words of the oracle. Oedipus desired to live a harmonious life without committing any offences. The narrative has been regarded as one of the Oedipus heroic search for his fate. Oedipus’ fate is the most tragic among the Greek myths and drama. When Oedipus was born, an Oracle at Delphi told his parents that the child will grow up to murder his father and take his mother as his wife. Horrified with prophesy, the parents decided to overcome the fate by tying the baby and leaving it by the mountainside to die. Fate however saved Oedipus when the shepherds found the baby and took him to king Polybus in the city of Corinth who adopted him as his own child. When Oedipus grew up, he learnt that he was adopted and went back to Delphi to trace his roots. However, Oedipus was still unsure of his identity. He moved out to avoid the disaster foretold about him. Unknowingly, he moved back to his own country where he met his destiny.

Oedipus learnt about his destiny while in Delphi and was determined to avoid. He vowed not to return to Corinth or Delphi and proceeded to Thebes. Oedipus however could not run away from his fate because his efforts to avoid it drove him closer to it. While Oedipus was on his way, he met an elderly man in a chariot and an argument on who should give way to the other arose. Oedipus decided to kill the old man who later turned to be his own father, king Laius.

When Oedipus arrived at Thebes, he learned that the people had been terrorized by a monster called Sphinx and that the king had been killed while he was going to seek help
