Complete 3 page APA formatted essay: My Papas Waltz.

Theodore Roethke has explored certain themes in this particular poem. There is the theme of love in that despite the papa’s shortcomings, his son loves him and looks up to him and cherishes the dances with him. He is thus ready to endure whatever little discomforts that come with the dance. Another theme that comes out in the poem is that of family relationship. There appears to be a warm and cordial relationship among the members of this family. As the son and father dance, the mother watches but is not exactly amused that the two dancing people have upset her shelf, sending the pins flying. She nevertheless does not interfere with the dance. Despite the seemingly difficult condition that the father appears to be undergoing as portrayed by his physical appearance, nothing can deny them the joy they have created for themselves in the setting of their house. In order to bring out his messages clearly to the readers, the poet has employed various aspects of style that makes the poem more vivid and enjoyable. The use of the simile in ‘I hung on like death’, might to a less discerning eye, appear to portray the experience negatively but on the contrary, it shows that just like death is persisted in its insatiable desire to devour human beings, the persona similarly, would not give up on the dance despite the discomfort. As stated earlier, there is the use of irony in that during the course of the waltz, the persona seems to be experiencing some discomfort but would not give up on the dance.
