This paper explores groups, institutions and prominent people as three major agents of socialisation.

A group basically refers to two or more people with mutual characteristics unique to others outside the group. There are three fundamental types of groups, which are crucial agents of socialisation. These include primary groups, in-groups and out-groups.

Primary group include family, military unit and peer group. A primary group refers to “a social group that has face-to-face contact and strong emotional ties among its members” (Ferrante, 2010, p.100). Even though love and harmony are major cementing factors among the members of a primary group, they are sometimes united by mutual hatred for another group. The bond between members of a primary group is usually emotional.

The family is a significant socialisation agent owing to the fact that it endows people with their cordial and initial with relationships and life rules in general. The family introduces a child into the real world and how to deal with various challenges as they grow. It is in the family that a person internalises and learns desired behaviour patterns. Despite the fact that behaviour learning is informal, individuals are expected to distinguish between right and wrong through incentive and chastisement system where the good is rewarded as the bad is punished. The family permits adjustments in behaviour because of strong emotional bonds between its members.

The second crucial primary group is peer group. This group influences a child’s pattern of behaviour as he or she interacts with peers. Peer group is self-regulating and does not involve adults. The interaction among peers can influence one’s behaviour pattern such as fashion, diet, and overall lifestyle among others.
