Offred a productive woman is treasured, but kept in the home of the commander to act as a surrogate mother for her wife, Serena Joy. Offred is a normal character, neither scholarly nor disobedient. She is a victory of the strength of human strength under hardship because she is the only survivor. Chapter 1: the night The chapter introduces us to Offred’s life behind bars at commanders’ resident where she is a Handmaid. It also introduces us to the situation and the dilemma of staying in Gilead in, prospect, it takes us rapidly through her inhibited life, Gilead, the administration within which she lives, issues of sexuality and productiveness, presentation control and chain of command over individual liberty and individuality, roles and even right to communication.
