Gay Marriages Should Be Legalized By All States When a man or a woman of right age falls in love, there is nothing that the general society can do to influence on his or her choice of partner. The US declaration of independence guarantees every person the right to pursue happiness irrespective of his or her religion, political inclination, among other social dimensions (Nagle, 2010). Article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees the right to marry and establish a family as long as the persons involved are men and women of right age. However, the fact that article 16 states, “men and women of right age” does not categorically imply that it is only a man and a woman who can enter into a marriage. The article also compels states and the general society to respect and protect the wishes of those who desire to unite in marriage (Claiming Human Rights, n.d). It is therefore unethical for any state or organization to try and impose restrictions on who to marry based on the fact that this would impact directly on the ability of couples to pursue their happiness. A person who is a homosexual can never find happiness in a heterosexual relationship and even though some bow to the socially constructed norms to marry persons of the opposite sex, they still go out in search of their true source of happiness, which is in same sex relationships. Such a situation is immoral as it amounts to adultery, which is one of the major risk factors contributing to divorce and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Illegalizing gay marriages is not a solution to bringing immorality and homosexuality out of the society. Furthermore, homosexuality is regarded as immoral as a result of socially constructed beliefs that are conservative and which does not embrace diversity in the society. These perceptions can however be changed through legalization of gay marriages. The church has contributed greatly to the negativity that is subjected to gay couples and homosexuality in general. It may be important to note that the Catholic Church, for example, has been on the forefront to oppose significant issues related to family and human reproduction. The use of contraceptives is one of such issues, which the church has termed as immoral while at the same time advocating for natural methods of family planning such as abstinence. This stand maybe guided by the church’s doctrines, which may not be easy to review but it lacks sufficient understanding of the facts on the ground, which indicate that abstinence is highly difficult to achieve. If gay marriages and relationships are legalized, the society will change its attitude towards gay couples and this will lead to improved access to quality services such as healthcare, entertainment, access to churches among others such as employment.
