The author assumes that the recovery process would be the same for all divorced individuals. The book is too broad. Ways the text addresses individual or family risk and resilience It encourages individual positive development after divorce and encourages friendly spousal interaction. Name: Course: College: Tutor: Date: A Better Life after Divorce Target Audience The book under review is Kelly Morrisey’s “A Better Life after Divorce.” The author’s target comprises of all individuals that have gone through divorce and are looking for recovery strategies. The book is highly likely to resonate more with divorced women that have children than other divorced parties, because Morrisey writes from firsthand experience of a divorced mother. The principal purpose of writing the book as Morrisey explicitly states, is to give hope to divorced persons and show them that future holds more positive things than their past or even present. As the author expressly indicates in the preface section, the book is meant to act as a guide for recovering divorcees and divorced men and enable them to live in a manner that they have always yearned to live. Morrisey places emphasis on the idea that recovery from the effects of divorce all depends upon the affected individual. This is evident when she stipulates that “the journey of recovery from divorce itself can be a liberating blessing and if you choose to, you can come out of your divorce enriched by the process, that’s right, better than you were before” (1). Key ideas Coping with After-Divorce Emotions Morrisey’s book comprises of nineteen chapters, some of which address the different phases that a divorced individual goes through in the course of recovery. Other chapters outline and comprehensively discuss strategies that individuals can use to heal and rebuild their lives. The first chapter focuses on how individuals can effectively deal with the shock, confusion and initial chaos that come after divorce. This allows the reader to understand that shock and chaos are not unique to their case and that they can effectively cope with the situation, just like others have. The author asserts that trying to keep busy during this period would go a long way towards enabling one to come to terms with the situation (Morrisey 21-24). In the second chapter, Morrisey informs the target audience that it is okay for them to grieve. This is because irrespective of the conflict that led to the split from one’s spouse, it is hard to overlook the fact that one built a life with them and even got children. Divorced individuals should, therefore, give themselves time to acknowledge the pain and gradually let go. Just like in the preceding chapter, the author recommends an exercise regimen. The subsequent seven chapters (from three to nine) adopt a similar approach, with explanation on how to cope with divorce-related emotions such as anger, fear, depression and acceptance.
