Women have been traditionally underrepresented in substance abuse research studies and treatment groups” (Battaglia).&nbsp. Generally, women are weaker compared to men physically and mentally and they are more vulnerable to alcohol and drug addiction. Women's alcohol addiction is more in some cultures compared to others. “The fact that many women are under immense pressure due to the combination of work and family is one cause of the increased abuse of alcohol by women. Many women tend to make themselves available to others and forget themselves” (Alcohol and women) Women are not getting enough time to release their stress either at home or at the workplace because of their increased workload. Most of the working women who have one or two children may not even sleep well because of their workloads. They will fail to execute their responsibilities both at home and their workplaces and the feeling of dejection often lead them to alcohol addiction.

The family and workplace tensions may prevent them from effectively participating in social activities which are needed especially for working women to release their stress. The advanced living standards demand more money and the thirst for new living standards and lifestyles force the women to look for more and more responsible positions which again increases their stress. “Studies have shown that the drinking patterns of employed women are different from those of women not employed outside the home, with less abstinence, increased consumption and greater frequency of drinking occasions observed among employed women” (Psychological Effects of Alcoholism) Social, economic and cultural reasons are attached with women alcohol addiction. In some cases, addiction for women is strongly linked with sexuality, including dominance and exploitation by men. Women's alcohol addiction can affect society and the family also apart from the addicted woman.
