Civilization is different from non-centralized tribal or feudal societies, which include hunter-gatherers or nomadic pastoralists. Civilizations are organized in highly populated settlements classified into hierarchical social classes with subordinate and elite rural and urban populations engage in mining, intensive agriculture, trade, and small-scale manufacturing. Civilizations concentrate power and extend human control over nature and other people (Ayala, 2010).
