He envisions that, in a European city, the building blocks are small and typologically complex in the urban centres, and, as the buildings grow away from the urban centres, the building blocks grow typologically larger, then finally dissolve into single free-standing objects. This is most pronounced when the building blocks are of the industrial age, as opposed to the pre-industrial age (Krier, 1984, p. 44). Krier also states that the periphery of the cities eventually become more of a part of the urban centre. When this occurs, the gardens which were a part of these peripheries soon become crowded, as well, with residential premises and artisans' workshops.
