However as an inexperience dietitian, I decided to have her continue with her nutrition counseling sessions even after I had completed required sessions. citing the need to better comprehend the relationships between her present domestic state, psychological condition and weight problems. However, during one of our regular treatment team meetings, while reporting on the client progress, I was questioned by the team leader as to why I did not handover the client to be handled by the mental health professional. To my surprise, the rest of my team members seem to concur with the team leader on this matter. I later understood that I had violated one of the Principles guarding counseling Code of Ethics.

The first code of ethics requires “any professional counselor to recognize and exercise professional judgment within the limits of his/her qualifications and collaborates with others, seeks counsel, or makes referrals as appropriate”(National Association of Social Workers policy statements,2012). Here, I was referred to the ADA values regarding social accountability and dietitian capability to appreciate the boundaries that exist between medical nutrition therapy and nutrition treatment versus psychotherapy. Additionally I was advised to pay much attention to particular situations that would require client’s referral to mental health experts.

As a counselor dealing with dietary issues, one must make a clear distinction of client problems based on professional scope. This will entail differentiating issues that relate to weight, food and eating pattern from those that are past the scope of nutritional practices, such as physical abuse, suicidal tendencies, marital difficulties, past unresolved sexual abuse, feelings of depression, and other related problems.
