Chemical activity is part of the normal signaling function in a neuron. The dendrites found in the neuron are lined on their surface with synaptic receptors. Signaling between neurons occur at these synaptic receptors with the help of neurotransmitters, which are natural chemicals of the body found in the neurons. These neurotransmitters include dopamine and nor epinephrine. These are the sensory neurotransmitters called catecholamines and are responsible for natural excitation and alertness of the human body. Through a series of chemical activities within the neuron, neurotransmitters, which are essentially chemical molecules, are released by the neuron at the synaptic cleft and these neurotransmitters attach themselves to the receptor sites, which are in enzymes and found at the synapse of the post synaptic neuron and alter the activity of the post synaptic neuron. Once the function is completed the neurotransmitter is released by the receptor and is taken back into the pre synaptic neuron through the reuptake receptors at the synapse. In this manner the presence of neurotransmitters like dopamine in the synapse is limited to prevent over excitation of the neurons. (Evans, Nathaniel. Cocaine – Where The Party Ends).

Interference in the Normal Chemical Activity at the Neuron by Cocaine:

Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters and the uptake of dopamine by the reuptake receptors at the synapse is restricted by cocaine. The molecular structure of cocaine is very similar to that of dopamine.
