This essay describes two different societies, in which one might observe a different attitude towards women. Analyzing ancient societies, in particular represented by Jews and Greeks, one can see that ancient women lived within a patriarchal system. It is suggested by the researcher that women had their specific responsibilities. The main role of women was to be a good mother and wife who was subordinated to her husband. Moreover, women demonstrated dependence on men. Compared with women, men had much more rights and opportunities. This can be seen through both books that were compared inthe essay - in the Hebrew Bible and in The Odyssey by Homer. To sum up, the researcher sttes that both the Hebrew Bible and The Odyssey are based on patriarchal ideas of male and female roles in society. It is analyzed that men have much more rights and opportunities than women do. On the other hand, men have a greater responsibilities for their actions, families and homeland. In this respect, the researcher suggests that the main difference between the Hebrew Bible and The Odyssey can be seen is the type of responsibility that is presented by men. In the Bible, however, male responsibility has a religious character, because men are considered by God as the main guarantor of the observance of God's will. In turn, in The Odyssey, masculine ideal assumes political and social responsibility of men, because in ancient Greek notions, man is seen as the head of the family, who is responsible for the family as well as for the native land.
