Assignment Two ("Story of an Hour")

Due Sunday, May 28th by midnight

Purpose:  To analyze the story from the vantage of symbols using a Reader-Response approach.

Directions:  Please create a five paragraph rough draft with each paragraph being about 5 to 7 sentences long.  You should use an introduction with a clear, 3 part thesis as the last line of the first paragraph.  Each support paragraph should explore one symbol and give evidence from the story (i.e., lines) that helps explain how and why you think it is symbolic.  Your last paragraph should be a conclusion that more or less summarizes the introduction.  Specifically, you are to state what you think Chopin's "Story of an Hour" is about.  In other words, what is it saying overall.  Then you are to "prove" what you think using three symbols and your interpretation.  Although this is a rough draft, students should still spend time editing it.  (Please note that this rough draft could become the basis of one of the three required final papers; if you think that you might want to use it as Final Paper One which is due Week Four, you may want to begin adding research and seeing a tutor for help in editing it).
