Assignment 3 ("Story of an Hour")
Due Sunday, May 28th by midnight.
Purpose: To analyze "Story of an Hour" from a Marxist or economic point of view.
Directions: Please create a five paragraph rough draft essay. Each paragraph should be about 5-7 sentences long. You are to casually research Victorian ideas of marriage and money. Once you feel comfortable discussing some of the ways the Victorian age (the time during which this story was written) differs from our century in its interpretation of the roles of men and women, discuss how gender expectations may give credibility to Mrs. Mallard's desire to be "free." In other words, is Mrs. Mallard upset at her husband or is she upset that societal expectations keep her from exploring her own interests? A solid paper structure would include an introduction with your three part thesis as the last sentence. Your first support paragraph could discuss the role of women in Victorian society. Your second support paragraph could discuss the role of men in Victorian society. Your third support could relate both expectations to the fictional characters of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard. Your conclusion could be your overall opinion. (Please be aware that this is the second rough draft that can be used as a Final Paper. Remember that your Final Papers are due Week 4, 5, and 6).
