Consider the following scenario, if you will. You know (somehow) that in one day you will drop through a wormhole pt a world in another star system. This world is in a star system that is somewhere within 50 light years from the Sun.You think you are stuck until you meet aliens and find that they are pretty friendly and will give you a ride home. These aliens are no more advanced than us, but they have recovered warp technology from a crashed aliens (different aliens) spaceships and so they can travel vast distances in a fairly short time. (Their maximum speed is about 5.0 light years per hour.)But their astronomy is only about as good as ours, so they will need some very good directions. They have no idea where our solar system is, but they have extensive knowledge of the stars within 100 light years of their home. Their knowledge of planets in star systems other than their is pretty limited. How would you tell the aliens where you lived? What information could you give so they could pinpoint our solar systems? If you give them the wrong directions, they will be annoyed and leave you stranded on the nearest habitable world. You may assume that the aliens (somehow) are familiar with our measures of distances, mass and time and (just like most science fiction) they speak a language the by a strange coincidence is just like English.
