The Cherry Orchard

  1. Chekhov wrote The Cherry Orchard for the Moscow Art Theatre, where he knew it would be directed by Konstantin Stanislavski. The two, however, disagreed about the essential nature of the play; while Chekhov called it a comedy, Stanislavski maintained that it was a tragedy. What do you think?

Chekhov described the play as a comedy, with some elements of farce, though Stanislavski treated it as a tragedy. Since its first production, directors have contended with its dual nature. I personally see this play as a tragedy. Although Ranevskaya, the protagonist of the play , displays most of her humor though her inability to understand financial or business matters, she can be defined as a noble and worthwhile heroine in a tragedy. She is a figure who evokes much pity and she is the one who goes through the hamartia and the peripeteia. The play ends with the complete fall of the once great heroine. These elements make this play a tragic one.
