Non-profit Organizations The Metropolitan Alliance of Community Centers (MACC) is an organization formed as a joint venture between direct service organizations of predominantly low-income resident of Minneapolis, nonprofit community-based, and St. Paul metropolitan area. This organization was in-cooperated in 1999 to essentially advocate on behalf of the families and individuals served by its agencies. It also served to increase the capacity of the agencies to survive in the changing and increasingly completive environment in the non-profit sector.

Driving ForcesHuman service delivery and commitment to the philosophy of the settlement house movement that the members shared formed the driving forces for the organization.Partner formationAt least all the executive directors from the present and potential members of the organization knew each other as well as each other’s agencies through United Way Council of Agency Executives. The organization shared many philosophical concepts. However, they had been traditionally separated by a geographical and symbolic barrier.

Timeline and Process for Alliance FormationThe alliance formation began in 1997 with 40 agencies. There were other series of meetings among interested executive directors who met at a monthly basis at rotating locations. There was a planning and formation process which took a period of two years to be completed. Facilitation The leader of Minneapolis was the prime convener of the alliance. Other executive directors also played leadership responsibilities in the early stages and also through the formation.
