However, Japan had limited trade with the Dutch and Chinese before opening its doors to U.S. This led to signing of the 1854 Treaty of Peace and Amity at Kanagawa. Full diplomatic relations began in 1858 through negotiations by Townsend Harris which led to signing of Treaty of Amity and commerce. Further negotiations followed leading to signing of more treaties especially to do with security in time of war. The relations were not a coincidence but a strategic decision by foreign policy makers in US especially the president who wanted to expand trade in the western region and the pacific was a suitable route to those areas and also China where US had interests. Japan led by Tokugawa Shogunates was opposed to any dealings with foreigners especially the West so as to safeguard its borders and strengthen its domestic interests. However, opening the borders to US and European countries was a turning point for its growth and modernity especially technologically. The US-Japan relations since then have been cordial especially in commerce and security.
