Barack Obama wrote the book as an autobiography in a search for his identity. Like most African American narratives this book to is a search for identity. Born to a Kenyan father and an American mother Obama was of mixed races. He grew up not knowing his father but having to live with his legacy. It has always been hard for an African American to live in a nation where they are constantly reminded of their slave past. What all the autobiographies written by African Americans show is that in their youth the people of these race try to come to terms with their past. Living in a society where they are the minority they have to deal with some discrimination and that creates anger and frustration.

Obama's grew up feeling a frustration that came from the fact that his father was not a presence in his life and yet, he was being faced with a legacy of discrimination because of that same man's race. He chose the title Dreams from My Father to represent his father's influence on his own self. A black boy, whose father chose a country above his family, Obama came to understand that in order to gain 'freedom' from the past history, he had to follow his father's ideals.
