A closed system on the other hand does not import energy from the environment instead. it generates its own energy within the system. Open system has the tendency to change the resources around them to useful materials whereas the closed system does not have this advantage of changing the resources (Tolbert & Hall, 2009). An open system uses differentiation and specialization in its system to ensure desirable results are achieved. On the other hand, a closed system does not use differentiation or specialization in its system therefore when the environment undergoes through some changes the closed system is not affected by the changes.

Incorporation and coordination is also applicable in an open system theory while this trait is not applicable in a closed system. Open system incorporates information input strategy to allow the public to criticize the operations of the system (Tolbert & Hall, 2009). Critics assist in improving the performance of the system. In a closed system, public opinion does not matter and the system works according to guidelines set by the system. An open system is known to ensure growth and development is achieved so that the system can survive through any environmental changes. A closed system on the other hand does not consider growth crucial because any changes in the environment do not affect the operations of the closed system (Tolbert & Hall, 2009).

The theory has the following perception in relation to an organization. The first paradigm is that for an organization to operate accordingly resources have to be available, without sufficient resources the organization cannot operate accordingly (Donaldson, 2006).

Another paradigm is that the resources come from the environment that surround the organization therefore any changes in the environment
