Ethos and pathos are the rhetorical strategies used in The Alchemist.

The first example of ethos is when Santiago arrives in Tangiers. A thief tricked Santiago out of all his money and possessions. This event could have made Santiago quit his journey, but instead chose to be labeled an adventurer (Coehlo, 42). Instead of being a victim, or turning into a thief himself, Santiago went on the search of his treasure in an ethical means. Santiago was not like the thief, he was ethical.

After finding the treasure, Santiago could have travelled the world or bought anything his heart desired. He did not. Santiago remembered his promise to Fatima and returned to her. He made the choice to do the right or ethical thing.

The emotional side of this book is poignant. Santiago falls in love, faces death, and completes his live journey all in one book. When he first meets Fatima, Santiago falls in love.
