Create a 3 page essay paper that discusses A particular area of concern in worker safety and health in recent years has been the disproportionate number of injuries and fatalities to immigrant workers. Describe reasons why immigrant workers may be at particular risk.
This is about 25% higher than the rate of death of the other workers. This paper will look at some of the reasons why immigrant workers are at a higher risk of occupational hazards than the other workers. The following are some of the factors that contribute to injuries among immigrant workers while at work (Levy 2011).
Once immigrant workers arrive in the country, they are usually desperate to secure employment opportunities. They are usually in a difficult position and will take any jobs that come their way. They are more than willing to take up any job that comes their way, despite the risks involved, most of these jobs are usually shunned by most American workers (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). Sometimes they are forced by tough conditions, particularly where one has been looking for a job for a long time and has not been lucky. He or she will take any job regardless of how risky the working conditions are.
The majority of immigrant workers cannot be able to speak or hear English. Most of them also have low educational backgrounds and cannot read or writing in English. While at work they receive instructions in English and if they are not conversant with the language they will have problems following instructions and as a result they cannot be able to following instructions to the latter (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). This puts them at a higher risk of suffering injuries while working.
Most immigrant workers are usually not given protective gear while at work. This exposes them to hazards of falling, particularly in construction sites where they work at high heights. Most employers are not willing to incur extra expenses to purchase protective gear and hence risking the lives of their workers.
Most immigrant workers are not aware about their rights to safe working conditions. Being illegal immigrants, they are also unwilling to report about unsafe working conditions
