Hartivig & Kuisma, 2006). Many individual’s entering incarceration facilities did not have healthcare available before incarceration. In many situations the lack of healthcare left these individuals suffering the symptoms associated with a mental illness. However, upon incarceration researchers have demonstrated that many individuals do not want treatment (Conklin, Lincoln & Tuthil, 2000). Treatment is defined as a psychological or psychiatric intervention. This notion leads investigators to theorize that certain characteristics are associated with inmates seeking interventions.

Psychological and psychiatric interventions may increase the chance of being paroled or attaining ‘good behaviors’ that would shorten the inmate’s incarceration time. In comparison of variables one study determined that approximately 79% of participants (N=2600) had children (Diamond, Harzke & Magaletta, 2009). Social ties to the outside world would cause a researcher to hypothesize that the inmate would utilize intervention services provided in hopes of being paroled. However, research concluded that only 11% of these individuals sought treatment. Research demonstrated that male participants were younger than female participants. Females were more likely to report previous mental health treatment including medication usage, suicidal ideation, and general mental health illnesses with the exclusion of hallucinations.
