Although the school seemed far away from everything, it was only about five kilometers from the nearest town. Every weekend, since we had nothing better to do, I and the thirteen other students who had transferred from NVS Gujrat walked those five kilometers to the town in the morning and walked them back to the school in the evening.
One weekend, after we had just come back, one of the other boys smiled and took something out of his pocket. It was a silver keychain, glinting in the dim light of the room. We had seen one just like it at a store in town. He smiled and put it back in his pocket when we clamored to see it, and admitted “I took it from the store, of course.”
“Who will notice a keychain?” he replied, walking to the door and making sure it was shut all the way. He stood with his back against it and took the keychain out again, jangling its fine metal strap. “Its just something to do, to show that youre smarter than they are and can pull it off.”
The next weekend everybody but me stole something as well. They took small things mostly, like keychains or rubber balls. I couldnt make myself do it, because I felt deep down that it just wasnt right to take other peoples things. When we got back to the school, they all laughed at me, calling me a coward and pushing me around the room we all shared.
The next weekend we went back to the shop again. This time I didnt dare stand apart. The other boys stole things again, working in the same manner as before. They would call the shopkeeper over and ask him about a certain item, and then when he went to get it their hand would slip out and a small item nearby would make its way into their pocket.
I set my eyes on a piece of candy with a bright blue-and-green wrapper. It was just netxt to the register, and should be easy to take, I thought. I walked up to the shopkeeper and put on my best schoolboy voice. “Excuse me, sir.”
