She also gathered her ideas about romance primarily from songs such as “you girls by Napoleon”. Music made Connie happy because the happiness she found with boys rooted in the romantic fantasies in the songs rather than in the boys themselves. When Arnold Friend came in her home, she revealed to him the music she likes listening to only to realize that it was the same music coming from his car. Therefore, when Arnold was not there with her for companion and she felt as if she was ill, she listened to music to make her relax. Moreover, Connie embraced the idea of romance from her favorite music and her encounter with Arnold reveals that the romance in her music was much more appealing than the reality of adult sexuality and seduction. Arnold friend’s car flashy gold car with its outdated phrases “man the flying saucers” written on the side was an extension f Arnold himself. This gave Connie her first clue that there might be something wrong or dangerous with Arnold. Connie farther senses that there is something not genuine about Arnold when he claimed to be the same age as she was.
