Discrimination of any form has been a prevalent issue in several countries, encountered by many, and aimed to be ended finally by individuals and groups advocating against it. A range of voluntary associations have shown diligent work in the field, noting that discrimination on grounds of race is one that cannot be addressed in isolation (Gutmann 201). Private sector corporations and businesses have their own share as well, which shall be highlighted in this paper. Gold Mountain Dreams The United States is commonly perceived as a dream, a “mountain of gold” to climb on, and this perception leads immigrants to make a massive influx in the country. However, it is not only in the US that they make huge arrivals, but also in some countries in Europe, such as the UK, Germany, Italy, and the like. In 1867, Fong See went to America in search of fortune. he started putting up a business which soon became an empire. Against all odds, he got married despite the prohibition of the law to unite two people of different races. His family faced immigration issues, which extended to the succeeding generations of his family. Some of these issues were racial discrimination, culture assimilation, and secret marriages. The “yellow race” continued to come to America by great number, year by year, until the Exclusion Law was enacted (See 44) and hence inhibited immigrants from entering the country without necessary documents. Racial discrimination in the country is also evident even amongst the Native American people in spite of the programmes rendered by the government. They are commonly considered ‘underclass,’ whose fate does not improve but instead worsened. These Native Americans now have to compete with the immigrants in the country, thereby making a big impact in the social and economic structures. Roma Being Expelled There are around 8,500 people sent back to Romania by some European countries claiming that these people are on illegal stay. Some leaders of the European Union believe that these people do not meet migration requirements and are only a burden to the welfare system. Some citizens and volunteer groups demonstrate sympathy however, stating that these people have dignity and must be respected enough to stay. Immigrants worldwide face challenges and issues both involving the government and the citizens. Native citizens often claim that immigrants cause government spending to exceed, that they never exert any effort learning the local language, that they acquire the employment meant for native citizens, and that they might potentially overrun the local culture. How Private Sector Corporations and Businesses Help Address Discrimination In the fast moving world just like today, people who especially belong to populated countries always find their way to survive and one of the options is by looking at the places where they thought would improve their situation. Threats of racism and racial discrimination often assail these people. It must be noted that private sector corporations are now mandated to follow legislations on non-racism and non-discrimination practices, whereby they are likewise encouraged to collaborate with trade unions and civil society in the pursuit of developing voluntary codes of conduct aiming to address and eliminate racism, racial discrimination, and other related issues (Doebbler 250). Addressing discrimination in the workplace is also undertaken by adopting inclusion policies and those that acknowledge cultural diversity. Moreover, current businesses adopt corporate social responsibility, which links their business activities to the social realities within their realm, influencing the way people perceive them and their products.
