Create a 6 pages page paper that discusses amma darko exploration of feminism in the novel beyond the horizon. Amma Darko is a writer from Ghana and “Beyond the Horizon”&nbsp.was her first novel published in Germany and “Beyond the Horizon” is a powerful novel by Darko in which she presents how the African black women were subject to objectification when they migrated to the European lands. Darko had written the novel being inspired by the movie, which was an adaptation of the novel, “The Colour Purple” by Alice Walker to deal with explicit sexual topics, and she wrote the novel. Shockingly Darko brings forward the factor that Black women are forced into prostitution and pornography by their own husbands or boyfriends for their self-interest. Through the novel, Darko tries to bring to light the life of a number of women who have been traumatized by the cruelties of prostitution and pornography in the western countries. She talks about the exploitation, which African women face in Europe but which they are forced to tolerate stoically because they are helpless and lonely in the new lands. Darko in her novel tries to portray a very strong image of her protagonist because the protagonist continually tries to reconstruct her private space and financial freedom in spite of undergoing an immense psychological crisis due to the sexual exploitation, which she faces day in, and day out. In the novel, she gets a scope to unravel the fact that the bodies of the Black women are in great demand among the White men for their sexual gratification. Through the novel, we also got a picture of the self-destruction, which the women chose when they are given a choice with subjugation. This paper has tried to find out how Darko in her novel has successfully dealt with the issues of feminism by relating the concepts of pornography and prostitution with the objectification of women and the fact how men utilize women to fulfill their self-interests.

This report discusses that “Beyond the Horizon” begins with a scene where Mara sits in front of her oval mirror and stares at her image. She says to her, “I am staring painfully at my image. My image? No! What is left of once used to be my image”. These words suggest that that Mara, the protagonist of the novel is completely disillusioned with her present situation. Rather through this Darko wants to say that when a woman faced constant humiliation it was natural that she will be disillusioned with life because association with the porn industry and prostitution had made her realize that her worth was nothing more than an object in the society. And gradually such a complex situation forces the woman towards insanity and drug addiction as was the case with Mara, Vivian, and Kaye. Many feminists have presented various views against prostitution and pornography. Among them, Andrea Dworkin and MacKinnon have said that pornography is a “systematic practice of exploitation and subordination based on sex that deferentially harms women”. &nbsp. In conclusion, after reading the novel by Darko we can say that the issues of feminism have been well explored by her through her portrayal of the characters. In fact, her tone resonates with all those feminists that women are used by men as tools and toys for the purpose of entertainment. She is also of the opinion that pornography and prostitution are means by which the women are made to feel inferior in society and they are also used to subjugate the women.
