Critical issues in society
1.HIV/AIDS has reached epidemic status in many parts of the world. From a public health standpoint, why has HIV/AIDS been such a difficult disease to prevent and control? Do you think we will ever be successful in eradicating HIV/AIDS?
2.Bioterrorism is a constant threat. A disease like smallpox can make a comeback at any time. In your opinion, is public health devoting enough time and attention on how to control an ‘eradicated disease’ from re-merging? What efforts are lacking?
Case study attached. Please answer the following questions:
- The case study mentions the integration of a top down approach to solve barriers to implementation. What do you think of this approach? What additional public health approaches do you think might be needed? Comment on the long term sustainability of the program. Apart from what is mentioned in the case study, what do you think needs to happen to keep the program up and running in the long term?
- Can the community organization model mentioned in the case study be applied to the control of another emerging or re-emerging disease? Think about a disease that is not mosquito borne. Based on the disease you choose, are there any other elements you might need to add to the community organization model?
